Steps to Applying to College

Find 3-5 schools that “fit” you. Meaning that:

-Your intended major is available at the school.

-You have the grades and test scores consistent with the school’s admission standards.

-You would be willing to attend the school, should you get in or have scholarship offers.

2. Have SAT or ACT scores sent to the schools you are interested in attending. This can be done as early as your junior year when you test. Then, once you apply to the school, they will already have your test scores since you coded the schools as score recipients when you tested. If you do not have test scores at the beginning of your senior year, sign up for October (SAT)/September (ACT) test dates immediately.

***Speak to your counselor before you register for SAT or ACT to ensure you get proper registration information.

2. Work on applications to the schools, most of which will be online. Computers are available in the Media Center and Guidance Office for your use. Applications will usually have a fee of at least $30 and they will require that your official transcript be submitted. Contact your counselor about sending transcripts and filling out recommendation forms as soon as you apply.

3. Make sure you are considered for scholarships from colleges. Many schools consider students for scholarships based on their application, but check with the school to determine if you need to submit additional scholarship forms. See individual college websites for their scholarship requirements.

Simply go to the RHHS homepage, click on “Guidance” and then click on “Scholarship Resources”.

Also, there is a scholarship notebook in the Guidance Office, where all scholarships that come directly to the school are listed. Students can request applications to be pulled and pick them up the next day.

5. All students will need to fill out the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. If you intend to get any loans, scholarships, or grants, you must fill this form out. The most efficient way to complete this is online at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ There is a worksheet available in the Guidance Office that can help you organize the information you will need before you complete the form online. Students can begin this process after January 1^st.

6. Keep track of deadlines and make sure you submit ALL materials on time. If you get a notice via e-mail or in the regular mail that the school is missing a piece of information, send it to them immediately. Many schools have so many applications to consider that ones that are turned in late are put on a wait list or given deferred status. Deferred status means that the school won’t give you an answer as fast as they will students that submitted on time or the best they will offer you is January enrollment, versus starting as an August freshman.

7. Bring copies of any scholarship or award letters that colleges offer you to your counselor. We acknowledge each senior class’s accomplishments!
